EC&I 831 – Summary of Learning

When we met to discuss our learning for EC&I 831, we each felt very strongly that making a full video that covered our key learnings in this course might be difficult. We took very different paths through the same course content, and each explored the implications of Social Media and Open Education on learning, very differently. What we could agree on however is that each of us felt that we had some “Big Ideas” or “Key Takeaways” from the process of engaging in networked learning, and Social Media Based learning projects. Takeaways that could in fact help others who might be looking to independently look into a similar self-guided process of learning a skill, or implementing social media in a new way in their lives or in their profession.

What came of this initial conversation was the idea that perhaps we could share our summaries of our explorations in the course content best through some small – but (hopefully) engaging clips. The idea being if we put these clips out on Social Media of some sort, they could then reach a larger audience, or network – of learners.

A key theme of this course for not just the two of us but also a sentiment echoed in many of our colleague’s blog posts was pushing oneself out of their comfort zone in order to experience the opportunities that social media can afford in education. So why stop when it comes to the Summary of Learning for a class where we all at times had to get a little comfortable in the uncomfortable?

Without further ado please follow the link here and check out our shared Tik Tok Summary of Learning ( scroll all the way to the last post of Dalton with Adele then scroll in a downward motion as Tik Tok makes a feed of our post when scrolling through our profile).

And please, whatever you do – don’t tell us we are “cringe”. Our little millennial-teacher hearts won’t survive that particular criticism.

The One Where He Created a Cooking Show For His Summary of Learning

What a semester! If you would have told me in September that I would learn how to make a Boston Cream donut, create a TikTok account and actually produce content on that app, get a private lesson from the owner of Queen City Cakes on how to make a chocolate topping, and find/share valuable resources that the staff at my school use regularly with our students I wouldn’t have believed you. But here we are at the start of December and all that happened over the last 12 weeks!

Unbelievable!

I created a video to sum up my learning for EC&I 831 Social Media and Open Education. The reason I made the video in the style of a cooking show is because I spent so much time this semester on YouTube watching them trying to perfect my donut making skills I figured I could make a recipe for the perfect EC&I 831 class.

Here is my final video.

November 28, 2021: …And That’s A Wrap!

Well folks… That’s it, that’s all! However, before I officially wrap it up, here’s a little background information on my Summary of Learning…

Since learning about Creative Commons licenses, I aimed to use the majority of my photos from this resource. In addition, Alec spoke to how humans shape tools and eventually the tools shape us. He made a reference to people taking pictures of notes and how this is not an effective use of a tool because it does not promote learning retention. This resonated with me because writing is such a huge part in how I learn and consolidate information. Bearing this in mind, I decided to do something that involved writing. Creating jot notes, symbols, and mind maps to showcase my learning this semester felt meaningful and came naturally when filming. Lastly, I love anything stationary related. I went out and bought myself a whiteboard and a multi-coloured Expo marker pack… Was this necessary? No. Did buying brightly coloured dry erase markers spark joy? Yes. In EC&I 833, I originally wanted to do a video like this. However, since the class was focused on educational technology, I felt it was more appropriate to create my summary using a tool I learned about in the class. For this summary, I was excited to put my original idea into action! The video looks pretty low tech, however, a significant amount of editing, filming, voice recording, and learning how to work my fiancé’s Canon M50 camera was a process. I had some knowledge on how to use the camera from EC&I 832, but it has been a while!

The conclusion of these classes are always a little bittersweet. I had so many artefacts of learning this semester I wanted to share, making it incredibly difficult to choose which pieces to highlight! Nonetheless, I’ve enjoyed this journey and the relationships I’ve gained throughout the course. It has been a pleasure learning alongside you all!

Now sit back, relax, and (hopefully) enjoy!

Until next time,

Leigh
